The Coral Clutches are bespoke leather clutches, handcrafted using individually cast aluminum nuggets that mimic the organic shape and form of corals. Each piece is unique, as no two metal corals are ever alike and cannot be replicated.
Inspired by the changing nature of cities, landscapes and industrial progress often synonymous with construction and evolving architecture.
The concrete pendants incorporate the same skill with which the walls and pillars of new buildings are erected. They do not have a base support with the pendant back made of metal - instead the pendants mimic the way metal girders are used to reinforce the strength of industrial structures. This essentially means that there is a thin wall of concrete embedded within each pendant and the skill lies in ensuring that it doesn’t break while being so thin!
I happened to have chanced upon these abstract cut pieces many months back at a hardware factory and was fascinated at how gorgeous they looked without meaning too.
Some things are even more beautiful because they are simply so unaware of their own beauty.
This was our first tryst with making wearable jewelry using hardware. We wanted to use hardware as an integral part of making chic, well finished and fashionable jewelry that made a statement.
It began with trips to Old Delhi's markets and experimentations with using brass plumbing washers welded into amorphous forms resembling the structure of atoms to make the 'Random Bolts' ring.
We instinctively decided to call it the Hardware Collection because each piece in our nascent collection was a unique element sourced from hardware stores like the 15 ampere fuses for the double fuse ring and fuse ladder earrings, watch dials, test tubes and clamps and at a molecular level this collection was to set the tone for what Studio Metallurgy would be known for – Art, Design and Innovation.
